Here are the materials you will need:

Scrap piece of lumber for the back panel: Mine measured approximately 5.5″ x 20″, but feel free to adjust this based on your space and desired aesthetic. Look for aged, weathered wood for that authentic reclaimed look.
Scrap lumber for the shelf: A smaller piece, around 4″ x 3″, will work perfectly. This will hold your decorative bottle.
Bottle: Choose a unique bottle that fits your style – a vintage medicine bottle, a small glass jar, or a decorative test tube can all look fantastic. Ensure it has a relatively narrow neck.
Coat hook: Select a sturdy hook that complements your reclaimed wood. Ensure it comes with appropriate mounting screws.
Drill: Essential for creating holes and driving screws.
Forstner bit and/or spade bit: The diameter should match the base of your chosen bottle. A Forstner bit creates clean, flat-bottomed holes, while a spade bit is good for faster, rougher cuts.
Clamp: Crucial for safely securing your wood pieces while drilling and gluing.
Pencil: For marking measurements and drilling locations.
Gorilla Glue: A strong adhesive known for its excellent bonding capabilities, especially with wood.
Wet rag: Important for activating Gorilla Glue and for cleanup.
Two wood screws: Approximately 1 5/8″ – 2″ long, for attaching the shelf securely to the back panel.
D-hook: With mounting screws, for hanging the sconce on your wall.

Optional items to enhance your reclaimed wood sconce:

Furniture Wax: To give your wood a beautiful, protective finish and subtle sheen.
Waxing brush: For even application of furniture wax.
Clean dry rag: For buffing the wax to a lustrous finish.
Picture bumpers: Small adhesive pads to prevent your sconce from scratching the wall and keep it level.
Chisel: Useful for cleaning out excess wood and refining drilled holes.

Step-by-Step Guide: Building Your Reclaimed Wood Sconce

With your materials and tools at hand, let’s begin the construction of your rustic and practical reclaimed wood sconce. Each step is designed to be straightforward, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable building experience.

Step 1: Prepare Your Wood Pieces

Begin by preparing your wood. Using a saw, carefully cut your scrap lumber pieces to the desired dimensions. For the main back panel, aim for roughly 5.5 inches by 20 inches. The smaller shelf piece should be approximately 4 inches by 3 inches. These dimensions offer a balanced aesthetic, but feel free to adjust them to fit your specific needs or the size of your chosen bottle and hook. I actually created two of these sconces, perfectly flanking either side of our doorway, demonstrating how versatile this design can be.

Step 2: Drill the Bottle Hole in the Shelf

Next, you’ll create the opening for your bottle vase. Securely clamp the small shelf piece to a sturdy workbench. This is crucial for safety and accuracy. Using your drill, create a hole in the center of the shelf that matches the diameter of your bottle. For me, this was a two-step process: my Forstner bit didn’t cut the center perfectly, so I first drilled with the largest spade bit I owned to remove the bulk of the wood, then widened and refined the hole to the correct size and clean edges with the Forstner bit. This method ensures a snug fit for your bottle.

Step 3: Refine the Hole with a Chisel (If Needed)

After drilling, there might be some excess wood or rough edges around the hole. This is where a chisel comes in handy. Carefully use a chisel to clean out any remaining wood, creating a smooth and even opening for your bottle. Take your time with this step to avoid splitting the wood, ensuring a clean finish.

Step 4: Test the Bottle Fit

Before proceeding, perform a quick test to ensure your bottle fits perfectly into the newly created hole. Gently insert your bottle into the opening. It should fit snugly without being too tight or too loose. Make any necessary adjustments now, as it will be much harder once the shelf is attached. This step guarantees your bottle vase will be secure and aesthetically pleasing.

Step 5: Mark Component Locations

Lay out all your components – the coat hook, the shelf with its bottle hole, and the bottle itself – on the main back panel. Carefully arrange them to achieve the desired spacing and aesthetic balance. Once you’re happy with the placement, use a pencil to mark the exact location for each item. This ensures everything is aligned correctly before you start attaching them.

Step 6: Pre-Drill Holes for the Shelf

Using your pencil marks as a guide, pre-drill two holes through the main back wood piece where the shelf will be mounted. Pre-drilling prevents the wood from splitting when you drive the screws and makes the assembly process much smoother. Ensure these holes align perfectly with where the screws will enter the shelf.

Step 7: Apply Gorilla Glue and Assemble the Shelf

Gorilla Glue works best when it interacts with moisture. Lightly wet both the surface of the shelf and the corresponding area on the back piece where they will join. Then, apply a small amount of Gorilla Glue to one of the surfaces. The wet wood allows the glue to foam up and soak into both wood surfaces, creating an incredibly strong bond.

Immediately clamp the shelf in place, making sure to offset the clamp slightly so that the pre-drilled holes remain accessible. While the glue is still wet and the clamp holds the pieces firmly, drive the two wood screws through the back panel and into the shelf. This combination of glue and screws provides maximum stability and durability for your shelf, ensuring it can hold your bottle securely for years to come.

Step 8: Attach the Coat Hook

Now, it’s time to add the functional element of your sconce. Position the coat hook below the newly attached shelf, aligning it with your earlier pencil marks. Using the small wood screws provided with the hook, securely attach it to the main back panel. Make sure it’s firmly fastened, as this hook will bear the weight of keys, leashes, or other items.

Finishing Touches and Hanging Your Reclaimed Wood Sconce

Your reclaimed wood sconce is taking shape! Now for the final steps that will bring out its beauty and prepare it for its new home on your wall.

Step 9: Apply Furniture Wax (Optional, but Recommended)

Allow the wax to penetrate the wood for 3-5 minutes, then use a clean, dry cloth to buff it off, revealing a beautiful luster and smooth finish. Step 10: Attach D-Hook and Bumpers

For secure hanging, center one D-hook to the back of the wall sconce, near the top. Ensure it’s level and firmly attached with its mounting screws. To protect your wall and keep the sconce stable, add small rubber picture bumpers to the bottom corners on the back. These prevent any rubbing or swaying against the wall, ensuring a neat and polished look.

Step 11: Hang and Decorate Your New Sconce!
