Transform Your Space: Embracing the “Love Your Home” Philosophy for a Happier Living
This summer marks a significant milestone for my husband and me: our 29th wedding anniversary. Like many couples, we harbored a lifelong dream of owning our own home. However, our journey to homeownership was far from conventional. In our younger years, a few missteps with credit set us on a different path. While thankfully nothing catastrophic, these early financial lessons taught us the invaluable discipline of living within our means. We committed to only purchasing what we could afford outright, or diligently saving until we had the necessary funds. Looking back, this was a profound, albeit unplanned, education.
As we entered our thirties, the concept of credit faded from our daily lives. We grew comfortable and content with our debt-free approach, and the idea of taking on a large mortgage felt increasingly daunting, pushing the dream of owning a home further out of reach. We found a rhythm in renting, creating a loving home in various spaces, never truly allowing the “renter” label to diminish our sense of belonging. Each house we inhabited became our “home” through effort and intention.
From Renters to Homeowners: Our 29-Year Journey Culminates
Then, just a few weeks ago, everything changed. Coinciding with my 50th birthday on March 6th, we officially became homeowners on March 10th! After nearly three decades of renting, we purchased the very house we had been leasing for the past year and a half. Stepping into this house, it immediately felt different. From the very first night we spent here, there was an undeniable sense of rightness. We all agreed: this wasn’t just *a* house; it felt like *the* home we were always meant to have, a place where our family truly belonged.
Our new home isn’t a “fixer-upper” in the traditional sense, but it’s easy to fall into the trap of constantly comparing it to the picture-perfect spaces we see on beautiful blogs and Pinterest. This digital age often fuels a focus on what we dislike, what feels outdated, or what we simply don’t have, creating an incessant pressure to keep up with every fleeting trend. It’s a common struggle for many, isn’t it?
Breaking the Comparison Cycle: Discovering “Love the Home You Have”
Serendipitously, my dear blog friend, Melissa Michaels from The Inspired Room, recently released a book that addresses this very sentiment: “Love the Home You Have.” This heartwarming book, infused with Melissa’s signature warmth and a touch of humor, serves as a gentle yet powerful reminder to cherish and find joy in our existing homes, regardless of their imperfections. Her philosophy encourages us to transform our current dwellings into the homes of our dreams, not by chasing external ideals, but by cultivating an inner appreciation.

Melissa’s blog was one of the first I ever followed, and it remains a constant source of inspiration. Her book mirrors the genuine wisdom found on The Inspired Room, offering a treasure trove of encouragement, practical tips, and creative solutions to refresh what you already possess. It challenges readers to make their homes work best for their unique lives, rather than striving for an unattainable ideal.
I am a steadfast advocate for truly loving the space you inhabit. Perhaps my nearly three decades of renting instilled this belief, as I always strived to imbue each temporary residence with the warmth and personality of “our home.” Melissa articulates this sentiment beautifully: “You can love your home. Yes, the one with flaws, everyday messes and maybe even a mix of hand-me-down furniture. Sure, it has some shortcomings, but it also has a lot going for it — it’s where your life, relationships and dreams are being shaped.” This resonates deeply with me because it’s profoundly true. She expertly navigates topics such as decorating with what you have, practical cleaning tips, finding a harmonious balance between everyday clutter and aesthetic beauty, and much more. At the conclusion of her insightful book, Melissa presents a comprehensive 31-day challenge, providing actionable steps to foster a deeper love for your home.
Embracing the “Love Your Home” Challenge
Recently, Melissa extended an invitation to some of her blogger friends, encouraging us to undertake at least one challenge from her book in our own homes. Choosing just one proved difficult, so I found myself enthusiastically tackling several of them, each bringing its own layer of insight and transformation.

The Power of Gratitude: Challenge Day 1 – Home Gratitude
Challenge Day 1, focused on “Home Gratitude,” particularly struck a chord with me. It’s a powerful exercise that encourages a profound shift in perspective:
[Home Gratitude]
Your home is a gift and a blessing. Walk around your house and think about how thankful you are for a roof over your head. In spite of all its quirks and imperfections, your home is where you can create a place to nurture yourself and bless your family. Try not to worry about all the material things you want to buy or change or improve. Instead, remember how blessed you are to be able to create a home full of memories with what you already have. View each room through the lens of gratitude for the life you can create and memories you can make in your home. ~ Melissa Michaels, author of Love the Home you Have and The Inspired Room blog.
It’s incredibly easy for my “home want list” to overshadow the blessings already present. This challenge served as a crucial reminder to pause, look around, and genuinely appreciate what we *do* have. The simple act of embracing contentment in our current surroundings, rather than constantly striving for the next upgrade, truly unlocks a deep sense of joy and peace. This exercise is not about settling; it’s about acknowledging the abundance that already exists and fostering a deeper connection to the space that shelters and nurtures us.

Creating Your Bedroom Sanctuary: Challenge Day 7 – Your Sanctuary
Challenge #7, titled “[Your Sanctuary],” focuses on transforming your bedroom into a peaceful retreat, rather than a cluttered storage space. Melissa wisely reminds us that everyone deserves a bedroom that feels like a sanctuary from the demands of the world. This particular challenge encourages not only the daily habit of making your bed but also a mindful tidying up and an assessment of what improvements could enhance this vital personal space.
Our master bedroom has historically been my least favorite room in the house. My eyes would invariably land on the mismatched furniture—a collection of cherished hand-me-downs and pieces we’ve owned for years, each with its own story, yet lacking cohesion. The wall color, too, was an item on my mental “to-change” list. It was a space that always felt like it needed work, rather than a place for rest and rejuvenation.

Small Changes, Big Impact: Our Spring Bedroom Refresh
However, inspired by Melissa’s words, my perspective began to shift. Today, everything changed with a conscious effort to see beyond the perceived flaws. I started to notice and appreciate the inherent beauty and history within the room: the magnificent handmade sleigh bed crafted by my dad, the sturdy oak nightstand, and the dresser that has been with me since childhood, each piece holding countless memories.

To infuse a fresh, spring-like feel into our bedroom, I recently invested in some new bedding, including crisp sheets and an assortment of decorative pillows. I deliberately chose not to dwell on the fact that the walls still needed painting. This simple update alone made a world of difference. (As a side note, having beautiful new bedding with appealing decorative pillows is a fantastic incentive to make the bed daily!) My husband and I are generally good about making the bed each morning, but it was often a cursory pull-up of the blankets. Now, it takes only an extra minute or two to make the bed properly: pulling the comforter down slightly, straightening the pillows, and artfully arranging the decorative ones. I find myself smiling every time I enter our room when the bed is impeccably made. Even if the rest of the room isn’t perfect, a well-made bed instantly elevates the entire space, creating an immediate sense of order and calm.

In addition to the new bedding, my newfound grateful perspective allowed me to truly appreciate the exquisite coffered ceiling, a feature I absolutely adore. I also found myself admiring the “Love You Madly” wall art I acquired from Hobby Lobby a few months prior, and the way the new white curtains beautifully brighten and open up the entire room.

Suddenly, with these simple shifts in focus and a few thoughtful additions, I saw a bedroom I genuinely loved. This isn’t just about decor; it’s about recognizing that we are in our dream home—not because it’s flawless or magazine-perfect, but because it’s *ours*. It’s where our lives unfold, where relationships deepen, and where good memories are made. Isn’t that, after all, the true essence of a dream home?

Beyond the Bedroom: Order in the Kitchen with Challenge Day 27
My journey through Melissa’s challenges didn’t stop at the bedroom. I also tackled Challenge #27, “[Order In The Kitchen],” specifically focusing on my pantry. This wasn’t about an elaborate renovation, but rather a practical approach to decluttering and organizing. I systematically went through the pantry, removing unneeded or expired items and neatly arranging everything else. The immediate sense of calm and efficiency that followed this “real life pantry organization” was truly invigorating. It reinforced the idea that even small acts of organization can have a significant positive impact on your daily life and overall home satisfaction.
