Ingredients for making homemade salted apple cider caramel sauce.

Ingredients You’ll Need

One of the best things about this recipe is how a few simple ingredients come together to create something that tastes like it came from your favorite bakery or apple orchard.

  • Apple cider – Fresh apple cider gives this caramel its signature fall flavor. As it reduces, the flavor becomes concentrated, creating the rich apple taste that makes this recipe so special.
  • Granulated sugar – The foundation of every great caramel.
  • Unsalted butter – Adds richness and that smooth, buttery finish.
  • Heavy cream – Creates a silky, pourable caramel sauce.
  • Vanilla extract – Rounds out the flavors.
  • Flaky sea salt – The finishing touch that balances the sweetness beautifully.

Cetcu Tip: Fresh apple cider is the key to this recipe’s signature fall flavor. Just be careful not to confuse it with apple cider vinegar.

Homemade Caramel Success Tips

Making caramel doesn’t have to be stressful. These simple tips will help you get silky smooth results every time.

  • Use a heavy-bottomed saucepan so the sugar melts evenly.
  • Resist the urge to stir the sugar while it’s melting. Instead, gently swirl the pan if needed.
  • Don’t worry if the caramel bubbles up when you add the cream—that’s completely normal. Keep whisking and it will smooth back out.
  • The caramel will look fairly thin while it’s hot. As it cools, it thickens into the perfect consistency.

Cetcu Tip: If your caramel becomes too thick after chilling, simply warm it for a few seconds in the microwave or let the jar sit in a bowl of warm water until it’s smooth and pourable again.

GIFT IDEA:
It also makes a thoughtful homemade gift. Pour the cooled caramel into a small glass jar, tie on a ribbon, and you’ve got a delicious hostess, teacher, or holiday gift that’s sure to be appreciated.

STORAGE TIPS:

Allow the caramel to cool before transferring it to a clean glass jar or other airtight container.

Store it in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. As it chills, the caramel will naturally thicken, so don’t be surprised if it’s no longer pourable straight from the refrigerator.

Cetcu Tip: Warm the caramel in the microwave for 10 to 15 seconds, or let the jar sit in a bowl of warm water until it reaches your desired consistency.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between apple cider and apple cider vinegar?

Although their names are similar, they’re completely different ingredients. Apple cider is fresh, unfiltered apple juice with a rich, sweet apple flavor. Apple cider vinegar is made by fermenting apple cider, giving it a tangy, acidic taste.
For this recipe, you’ll want fresh apple cider. Using apple cider vinegar will completely change the flavor of the caramel.

Can I use apple juice instead?

Fresh apple cider gives this caramel its signature flavor, so it’s my first choice whenever it’s in season. Apple juice will work, but the finished caramel won’t have the same rich, fresh apple flavor.

Does homemade caramel need to be refrigerated?

Yes. Because it’s made with butter and heavy cream, it should be stored in the refrigerator.

How long will homemade caramel keep?

Stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator, this caramel will keep for up to two weeks.

Can I freeze apple cider caramel?

Yes! Freeze it in a freezer-safe container for up to three months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator, then warm gently before serving.

Salted Apple Cider Caramel Sauce is a rich, buttery homemade caramel infused with real apple cider and finished with flaky sea salt. Perfect for drizzling over ice cream, cheesecake, apple desserts, pancakes, and more.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups apple cider
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed
  • ½ cup heavy cream , room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon flaky sea salt

Instructions

  1. Reduce the apple cider: pour the apple cider into a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Simmer until reduced to about ½ cup, stirring occasionally. This usually takes 20-25 minutes. Transfer the reduced cider to a bowl and set aside.
  2. Make the caramel: In the same saucepan, add the sugar. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally at first, then more frequently as the sugar melts and turns a deep amber color.
  3. Add the butter: Carefully whisk in the butter one cube at a time. The mixture will bubble vigorously. Continue whisking until smooth.
  4. Add the cream: Slowly pour in the heavy cream while whisking constantly. Continue whisking until fully incorporated.
  5. Finish the sauce: Whisk in the reduced apple cider, vanilla extract, and salt. Simmer for 1 to 2 minutes until smooth and glossy. Remove from heat.
  6. Cool: Let the caramel cool for about 15 minutes before transferring it to a glass jar. The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.
